As part of Day 1 of Maxon's NAB 2016 presentations, Creative Director Donnie Bauer showed Cinema 4D techniques for typography and motion graphics. Donnie first showed how to create typography using the Sweep object and animate it using Spline Dynamics and deformers. Then Donnie showed how soft selection and sculpting can be used to mold objects using the Correction Deformer, and multiple Correction Deformers can be animated to morph the shape.
After over four years of saving up our points on our FOJ (Friend of Jake’s) Card we cashed in for a two-hour all-you-can-drink all-you-can-eat Happy Hour at Jake Melnick’s Corner Tap. We’ve celebrated at Jake’s many times - birthdays, goodbye parties, new hires, etc. And 3500 points later, it was time to party. This night we also officially welcomed Katie Smith to our team as Producer.
It didn’t take long to up the ante from regular Spicy to Super Hot. Usually only Luis is brave enough for Super Hot, but after a few drinks most of us joined in. From there, only the most daring among us (Luis, Jon, Donnie) made the step up to XXX, which now apparently includes the use of the Trinidad Scorpion Pepper. Based on how woozy Donnie and Jon ended up, perhaps we went a bit too far.
Check out the pix below for a recap of a great night out. It’s time to start refilling the card, let’s do it again in 4 years.
On September 7th Optimus Design took on the Chicago Half Marathon. Executive Producer Jon Desir, Creative Director Donnie Bauer, Designer Luis Mayorga, Accounting Coordinator Jim Moore, and Freelance Designer Matthew Butler blazed 13.1 miles on Chicago’s south side. The course started near 63rd street and rambled up Lakeshore Drive to 31st then back down to Jackson Park for the finish.
We stepped off the starting line at 7am sharp. The temperature was in the mid 60’s, a near perfect morning for running. As we approached the turnaround at mile 8 the sun was high in the sky and the lake front was starting to heat up. By the time we finished, it was hot, we were tired, and it was time to party.

Special thanks to Chris Schmidt & Jack Bransfield, leaders of the Chicago C4D users group for asking us to host the August meet-up. Over 70 C4D fanatics attended our event, led by Creative Director Donnie Bauer and animator Luis Mayorga.
Donnie & Luis gave the audience a tour of two projects, Shedd Aquarium "Feel the Wonder" and BlueCross BlueShield "Life." For the Shedd project, the emphasis was on Luis' custom rigging techniques for the animals. For BCBS we showcased the entire process from concept to finish, with a focus on Cinema's easy-to-use splines and deformers.
We couldn't have had such a successful event without the support of the client service team from Optimus, led by Kaitlyn Lanegan. We're also grateful for the turntable work of Marko Markewycz, VFX artist, painter, and vinyl enthusiast.
